Over the past two decades, more and more developing countries have signed into bilateral and regional “free trade agreements” in the hope that this will provide them with greater access especially to Northern markets. Yet quite often these hopes have been belied. Meanwhile, most such agreements have several provisions, especially with regard to investment protection, intellectual property, procurement, domestic regulations and related measures, which go well beyond the already stringent requirements of the WTO. These can have severe implications on the development project as well as on the human rights of citizens, as Prof. Jayati Ghosh will show through several concrete examples.
